In May, German artist Annette Lück-Lerche settles into ART56°'s artist residence at Æ Gammel Havn 9, where she invites guests into her distinctive artistic world.

Annette Lück-Lerche's works revolve around a central theme: the destruction of nature and the environment. She has found the ideal material to express this subject in paper – itself a product of nature, made from wood and plant fibers, with almost unlimited malleability.

— An important theme for me is the destruction of nature and the environment, and paper is perfect for working with this. Paper is part of nature, made from wood and plant fibers. You can create almost anything from it, says Annette Lück-Lerche.

Her working process begins with observation. Forms and structures from nature become inspiration for a unique and unmistakable formal vocabulary, where fragile sculptures of paper, twigs, and natural materials meet expressive paintings in warm, earthy color tones.

— For me, observation and immersion in nature are central moments of inspiration. During my time in Hvide Sande, I want to work with forms from nature, with structures and colors to create my own wilderness using formal means.

In her paintings, color takes center stage. The works are abstracting, leaving room for associations, forms blur and dissolve in color streaks. Alongside painting, she also develops collages where she plays with bodies and faces, reduces the human figure, alters proportions or distorts them.

— My works are not the result of predetermined ideas, but rather develop as the image concept and painting process mutually influence each other. Sometimes I have to completely abandon an idea before the image feels right to me.
