Lars Kristian Hansen (b. 1963, Risskov) has been a full-time artist since 2003, represented by galleries across Denmark, with an extensive exhibition record and a number of large-scale decorative commissions to his name. Before painting became his life, he worked as an occupational therapist in psychiatry and as a teacher – experiences that still run through his understanding of human expression and emotional life.
His paintings are built up in layers, through a process that is at once intuitive and rigorously crafted. He moves between spontaneity and structure, doubt and decisiveness, searching for the point where something can be felt rather than just seen – where the painting has, as he puts it, come home. Beautiful and ugly. Strong and fragile. Light and dark. Warm and cold. The contrasts of a life, set free through form, movement and colour.
Lars sees himself as something like a conductor – moving through colour as if through tones and harmonies, assembling each work like a composer piecing together a score. Painting and music, he says, can do the same thing: express what words cannot reach.
Come and watch a painting find its way – and see if you feel it.
